Ajay Piramal (born on August 3, 1955) is an Indian businessman from India. In 2016 Forbes reported his wealth at US $3.3 Billion which placed 42 in the list of India’s top 50 richest individuals. He is the CEO of his company, the Piramal Group, a diversified company with a presence in more than 100 cities.

Under his direction, the Piramal Group evolved from a manufacturing company focusing on textiles to a $5 billion conglomerate, with diverse business interests that span packaging, pharmaceuticals financial services, and real estate. His ambition is that the company will generate annual revenues of $20 billion in 2020.

Then, in 1988, the company acquired Nicholas Laboratories, an Australian multinational company. The company, which at the time was competing with companies like Pfizer and Glaxo is currently 5th among the top 10 pharmaceutical companies in India after having completed numerous overseas acquisitions such as the Indian subsidiary companies that include Roche, Boehringer Mannheim, Rhone Poulenc, ICI, and Hoechst Research Centre.

Family and Education

Piramal has a bachelor’s degree in Science from Jai Hind College and Basant Singh Institute of Science, the University of Mumbai (then Bombay) as well as a master’s in management studies at the Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies, University of Mumbai and, in 1992, he took part in the 6-week Advanced Management Programme at Harvard Business School. Piramal was awarded an honorary doctorate from Amity University, India, and an honorary doctorate of Science from IIT Indore.

Early Life

Ajay Piramal was born Gopikisan Piramal as well as Lalita Piramal of Rajasthan, India on 3 August 1955. In 1977, aged 22 Piramal began his career in the family’s business of textiles that was established at the age of 34 by his grandpa Piramal Chatrabhuj. He was the son of Gopikisan Piramal passed away in 1979. After five years of his life, he lost a younger brother who was diagnosed with cancer. This led him to assume the company.

Personal Life

Ajay Piramal was married Swati Piramal. They have two children. Their daughter Nandini was married to US resident Peter D’Young in 2009. His son, Anand Piramal, married Isha Ambani the granddaughter of Mukesh and Nita Ambani in December 2018. The family believes in Radhanath Swami to be their family guru.

Career

He assumed the responsibility for his father’s business of cutting and weaving tools business when he was 22. He was able to manage the business alongside his two siblings Dilip as well as Ashok. However, within two years of his father’s passing in 1979, His brother Dilip established “VIP Industries” and “Blowplast which was a separate company between 1982 and 1983.

In 1984, after his brother Ashok passed away from cancer, his official appointment was to the company ‘Piramal Enterprises as chairman, as well as the managing director of ‘Morarjee Mills. He made a bet in the Gujarat glass industry in 1982, which proved to be cost-effective for him.

In 1988, he bought a pharmaceutical company, ‘Nicholas Laboratories,’ and transformed it into ‘Nicholas Piramal.’ He did not have much knowledge of the healthcare industries of that time, but with the cooperation of his workers and strategies such as overtime work, competitive prices, and indigenous drugs, his industry, within a short period of time, gave a strong competition to the pharmaceutical companies-GlaxoSmithKline and Pfizer.
