Amrita Singh, born on February 9, 1958, is the daughter of Rukhsana Sultana and Shivinder Singh Virk, who served as an army officer. Her mother, Rukhsana, gained recognition as a political associate of Sanjay Gandhi during the Indian Emergency in the 1970s. During this time, Sanjay Gandhi initiated a controversial sterilization campaign, and Rukhsana became known for her involvement in leading the campaign specifically in Muslim areas of Old Delhi.

Amrita Singh entered into marriage with actor Saif Ali Khan in January 1991. Before their union, Singh, who was raised in a Sikh family, chose to convert to Islam.
