Development and Casting
Mayank and Rohit Shetty had initially intended to collaborate with Shah Rukh Khan on a remake of the 1982 film “Angoor.” However, after the success of their 2011 blockbuster “Singham,” Shetty began working on the script for the Angoor remake but left it unfinished. As acquiring Shah Rukh Khan’s filming dates proved challenging, the script for “Chennai Express” was prepared as a backup option for him.
Upon reading the script, Khan liked the idea and agreed to star in it before the Angoor remake, causing Angoor’s remake to be postponed. Shetty said the film is “a hard-core commercial film with a romantic angle.
Music
The score for “Chennai Express” was composed by Amar Mohile, while the songs were composed by the duo Vishal-Shekhar. The lyrics for the songs were penned by Amitabh Bhattacharya and Yo Yo Honey Singh. The recording of the songs commenced in late October 2012, and one of the tracks, “Ready Steady Po,” was recorded in November 2012 by the music composers themselves.
Release
“Chennai Express” had paid previews in India on August 8, 2013, with multiple shows at multiplexes. The film’s release was also planned in non-traditional international markets. Notably, it became the first Hindi film to be released on the same day as in India in Peru.
