The story revolves around Rahul Mithaiwala, a wealthy individual who mistakenly boards the titular train and embarks on a journey from Mumbai to Rameswaram with the daughter of a powerful don. Initially, Shah Rukh Khan and Rohit Shetty had planned to collaborate on a remake of the 1982 film “Angoor.”

However, they opted for a different project and chose the script of “Chennai Express,” which was originally conceived as a backup option for Khan. The film was initially titled “Ready Steady Po” and was envisioned as a commercial romance. Filming commenced at Mehboob Studio in October 2012 and concluded in May 2013.

Plot

Rahul Mithaiwala is a wealthy, 40-year-old bachelor residing in Mumbai. Unfortunately, he lost both of his parents at a young age and was subsequently raised by his grandparents. His grandfather, Y. Y. Mithaiwala, is a successful businessman who owns a chain of confectionery shops.

Before the grand celebration of Y. Y.’s 100th birthday, Rahul’s friends Bobby and Baman invite him to join them on a vacation in Goa. Rahul agrees and decides to accompany them. However, on the eve of the birthday celebration, tragedy strikes as Y. Y. passes away. As fate would have it, Y. Y. witnesses Sachin Tendulkar getting dismissed on his 99th run while watching a cricket match on television just before his demise.

Development and Casting

Mayank and Rohit Shetty had initially intended to collaborate with Shah Rukh Khan on a remake of the 1982 film “Angoor.” However, after the success of their 2011 blockbuster “Singham,” Shetty began working on the script for the Angoor remake but left it unfinished. As acquiring Shah Rukh Khan’s filming dates proved challenging, the script for “Chennai Express” was prepared as a backup option for him.

Upon reading the script, Khan liked the idea and agreed to star in it before the Angoor remake, causing Angoor’s remake to be postponed. Shetty said the film is “a hard-core commercial film with a romantic angle.

Music

The score for “Chennai Express” was composed by Amar Mohile, while the songs were composed by the duo Vishal-Shekhar. The lyrics for the songs were penned by Amitabh Bhattacharya and Yo Yo Honey Singh. The recording of the songs commenced in late October 2012, and one of the tracks, “Ready Steady Po,” was recorded in November 2012 by the music composers themselves.

Release

“Chennai Express” had paid previews in India on August 8, 2013, with multiple shows at multiplexes. The film’s release was also planned in non-traditional international markets. Notably, it became the first Hindi film to be released on the same day as in India in Peru.
