Jiah Khan, also known as Nafisa Rizvi Khan (20 February 1988 – 3 June 2013), was an actress and singer who appeared in Indian films. She was born to Indian parents in New York City and was raised and educated in London. Khan had a keen interest in acting and decided to move to Mumbai to pursue a career in films. She appeared in three Hindi films between 2007 and 2010.

Her parents were Ali Rizvi Khan, an Indian American businessman, and Rabiya Amin, a former Hindi film actress from the 1980s. Khan’s father left the family when she was young, and her mother raised her in Chelsea, London. Her mother later remarried Thomas Puppendahl, and Khan had two younger sisters named Kavita and Karishma.

At the age of six, Khan watched the Bollywood film Rangeela starring Urmila Matondkar and was inspired to become an actress. She later enrolled in the Lee Strasberg Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York to receive acting training but left the program after receiving a film offer.

Career

When Jiah Khan was 16 years old, she was cast to star in Mukesh Bhatt’s Tumsa Nahin Dekha in 2004. However, Khan and the director mutually decided that the role was too mature for her, and she backed out of the project. Dia Mirza replaced her immediately. Three years later, in 2007, at the age of 18, Khan made her debut in Ram Gopal Verma’s romantic thriller Nishabd, playing the role of Jia opposite Amitabh Bachchan.

Despite the film’s controversial and provocative content, it received mixed reviews from critics and performed poorly at the box office. However, Khan’s performance was mostly well-received, with critics praising her confidence, attitude, and sex appeal. Raja Sen particularly admired Khan’s nuanced and impressive portrayal of Jia, a seductive and free-spirited teenager.

Death

According to reports, Khan passed away by hanging at her Juhu residence in Mumbai between 11:00 pm and 11:30 pm. Her mother and sister were not present at home during the incident. After conducting an autopsy at JJ Hospital in Byculla, her body was returned to her residence around 7:00 am on Wednesday.

Following the post-mortem, her Namaz-e-janaza (funeral prayer) was held at Sonapur Kabar Walla Masjid on the same day. Khan was buried at Juhu Muslim cemetery after Dhuhr prayer, by Islamic rites.
