Ke Huy Quan, also known as Jonathan Ke Quan in Vietnamese, was born on August 20, 1971. He is an American actor. Quan was Short Round in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984), and Data in The Goonies (85). After roles in the sitcom Head of the class (1991) as well as the film Encino Man (1992), Quan stopped acting because of a lack of opportunities for Asian American actors.
After a 20-year hiatus, Quan was back to acting in 2021. His role as Waymond Wang (a loving and kind husband who navigates the multiverse) in the science-fiction comedy-drama Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022) was highly acclaimed and won him many awards, including an Academy Award, a Golden Globe Award, and an Academy Award.
Family
He was born on August 20, 1971, in Saigon, South Vietnam to Vietnamese parents. His parents are Hoa (Chinese). Ke has eight siblings. His family fled Vietnam in 1978. Her mother, three siblings, and three more moved to Malaysia. However, her father and five siblings settled in Hong Kong refugee camps. In 1979, Ke and his entire family immigrated to America.
Early Life
Quan was born in Saigon, South Vietnam on August 20, 1971, to Vietnamese parents of ethnic Chinese (Hoa). He is the father of eight children. His family fled Vietnam in 1978. His father and five of his siblings, along with his mother and three siblings, arrived in Hong Kong to seek refuge. The 1979 refugee resettlement program allowed his entire family to enter the United States.
Education
Quan attended Mount Gleason Junior High School, Tujunga, California, and Alhambra High School, Alhambra, California. Quan graduated in 1999 from the USC School of Cinematic Arts, where he produced and filmed Voodoo. It was directed and written by Gregg Bishop.
Personal Life
Quan, a Han Chinese descendant from the Hoa ethnic minority group in Vietnam, is of Han Chinese descent. He is fluently bilingual in English, Cantonese Mandarin, English, and Vietnamese. Quan is married to Echo Quan, and he resides in Woodland Hills (Los Angeles). Quan is still close friends with Jeff Cohen, his Goonies star and entertainment lawyer.
Career
At 12 years old, Quan was cast as Short Round, Harrison Ford’s sidekick in Indiana Jones and The Temple of Doom. Casting director Quan auditioned Castelar Elementary School children, including his younger brother. Quan starred in The Goonies 1985 as Richard “Data”, Wang’s child.
In the 1986 Taiwanese film It Takes a Thief, he played a pickpocket child orphan. He appeared with Japanese idol singer Honda Minako in Passengers (Passenja Sugisarishi Hibi) in 1987. From 1990 to 1991, he played the role of Sam in the TV series Together We Stand (1986-1987). He also played Jasper Kwong on the sitcom Head of the Class (1990-1991).
He was a star in the 1991 movie Breathing fire and a small part in Encino Man (1992). The Big Eunuch and the Little Carpenter, a Mandarin-language television series that ran for forty episodes, featured him as the star. He also starred as Red Pirate, a 1996 co-production between Vietnam and Hong Kong.
