Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw is the Chairperson and Managing Director of Biocon Limited. She gave the ‘Othmer Gold Medal by the U.S.-based Chemical Heritage Foundation, for her outstanding contribution to the advancement of chemistry and science in 2014. In 2014, she awards the highly sought-after “2014 Global Economy Prize for Business from Germany’s Kiel Institute for the World Economy.

She is an elected part of the Board of Governors at the Indian School of Business and is also the very first female to lead the Board of Governors of the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore. She was also awarded the Padma Shri (1989) and Padma Bhushan (2005), given to her by President India for her groundbreaking work on Industrial Biotechnology.

Kiran originally wanted to follow in the footsteps of her father. She was a student at the Bishop Cotton Girls’ High School.

Personal Life

She was born to Gujarati parents from Banglore on the 23rd of March 1953. She was from a middle-class family. The father of her mother, Rajendra Mazumdar was the head brewmaster of United Breweries.

Professional Life & Career

Kiran began her career with Carlton in Carlton and United Breweries, Melbourne, where she was an apprentice Brewer. Kiran Mazumdar completed her training at Carlton in Carlton and United Breweries. She also worked for Barrett Brothers and Burston, Australia as a maltster in training.

After returning to India and joining Jupiter Breweries in Calcutta as an expert in technical consulting, after gaining knowledge there, she technical manager at Standard Maltings Corporation situated in Baroda. She decided to pursue a professional career in Bangalore or Delhi told “a man’s profession” and that women could not work as master brewers within India.
