Lal Bahadur Shastri was born on the 2nd of October 1904 He was the son of Ramdulari Devi and Sharada Prasad Shrivastava within Mughalsarai, United Provinces (modern-day Uttar Pradesh). He was born on the same day as Mahatma Gandhi, who was the patriarch of the nation.
Lal Bahadur was against the prevalent caste system and chose to drop his surname. The name “Shastri” was awarded following his graduation from Kashi Vidyapeeth, Varanasi in 1925. The name “Shastri” is a reference to a “scholar” or someone who is proficient in studying the “Holy scriptures”.
Career Political
After India’s Independence,he was appointed the Parliamentary Secretary in U.P. He was also the minister for Police and Transport in 1947. As Transport Minister, he had appointed female conductors in the beginning. As the minister responsible for the Police Department, he passed the directive that police employ water jets and not lathis for dispersing the angry crowds.
Death
Lal Bahadur Shastri, who was previously suffering from two attacks on his heart, passed away from a third cardiac arrest on January 11, 1966. He is the sole current Indian Prime Minister who passed away overseas. Lal Bahadur Shastri was awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s most prestigious civilian award, posthumously in the year 1966.
