Career
She dedicated herself to her teaching career until 1984. However, her life took a dramatic turn that year when she was deeply influenced by the work and initiatives of Kanshi Ram. In 1984, when Kanshi Ram established the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), Mayawati decided to make a significant career change and became a full-time member of the party, leaving her teaching job behind. In the same year, she entered the political arena by contesting her first election campaign from the Kairana Lok Sabha seat in the Muzaffarnagar district. She continued to run for Lok Sabha seats in 1985 and 1987. Eventually, in 1989, the BSP achieved significant success by winning 13 seats in the Lok Sabha.
