Prakash Raj, originally known as Prakash Rai, is an accomplished Indian actor, film director, producer, television host, and politician. His contributions to Tamil, English, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, and Hindi-language films have earned him numerous accolades, including five National Film Awards and eight Nandi Awards.
Initially, Raj began his career by performing in Kannada stage shows and on television before transitioning to the world of film. He marked his debut in Tamil cinema with K. Balachander’s Duet (1994) and has since been a highly successful commercial film star in Tamil. To honor this achievement, he named his production company Duet Movies.
Family
Born into a lower-middle-class family in Bangalore, Prakash Raj’s upbringing was rooted in Hinduism, which is also the faith of his family. However, he himself identifies as an atheist. His birth name is Prakash Rai and his parents are Manjunath Rai, who is of Tulu descent, and Swarnalatha Rai, who is Kannada.
He also has a younger brother named Prasad Raj, who is also an actor. Prakash Raj is married and his first wife’s name is Lalitha Kumari, whom he wed in 1994. Together, they have two daughters named Meghna and Pooja, as well as a son named Sidhu. Sadly, Sidhu passed away in 2004.
Education
Prakash Raj attended several educational institutions affiliated with St. Joseph’s, including St. Joseph’s Boys’ High School, St. Joseph’s Indian Composite Pre-U, and St. Joseph’s College of Commerce (Autonomous). He completed his secondary education at St. Joseph’s Indian High School before enrolling at St. Joseph’s College of Commerce in Bengaluru, Karnataka, where he pursued his Pre-University Course from 1983 to 1985.
Personal Life
Born on 26 March 1965 in Bangalore, Prakash Raj hails from a family with Tuluva and Kannada roots. He has a younger brother named Prasad Raj, who is also an actor. After finishing his secondary education at St. Joseph’s Indian High School, he enrolled in St. Joseph’s College of Commerce, Bangalore.
It was actress Geetha who introduced him to the renowned Tamil film director K. Balachander, who advised him to change his surname from ‘Rai’ to ‘Raj.’ Although he is still referred to as Prakash Rai in his home state of Karnataka, he adopted the name Prakash Raj professionally.
Career
Starting with TV serials such as Bisilu Kudure (Kannada) and Guddada Bhootha (Tulu and Kannada), Prakash Raj made his foray into acting. After showcasing his talent in Kannada TV shows, he demonstrated his abilities in his debut film, the Tamil movie Duet in 1994. In addition, Prakash Raj has made a name for himself as a dynamic politician, unafraid to speak his mind. He has also produced numerous films in the Indian film industry.
