Dalip Singh Rana, born 27 August 1972, is an Indian retired professional wrestler and promoter best known by his ring name The Grand Khali. His tenure with WWE, where he was the first Indian-born WWE World Heavyweight Champion, is his most prominent accomplishment.

Dalip Singh Rana was conceived in Dhiraina in Himachal Pradesh to Jwala Ram Rana and Tandi Devi on August 27, 1972. Six other children join him.

Early Life
Rana was born to a Rajput Family to Jwala RAM and Tandi Devi, his wife, was also born to a Rajput Family in the Dhiraina Village of Himachal Pradesh’s Sirmaur District. Rana was one of seven children from a poor family. He had to work odd jobs to make ends meet. Rana has acromegaly. This condition, among others, causes gigantism as well as chin protrusion.
Rana was working as a Shimla security guard when he met a Punjab Police officer. He had previously helped many employees of the Punjab Police become international athletes and got Rana into the Punjab Police in 1993.
Personal Life
Rana is described as “extremely religious”. Rana meditates daily and abhors alcohol and tobacco. Ashutosh Maharaj was his spiritual mentor. Rana is believed to have suggested The Great Khali as a ring name after Kali, a Hindu goddess associated with eternal energy. In an interview with India TV, he denied the claim and stated that the name was not his own.
Career
Dalip Singh Rana came to America in 1999 as a refugee and joined the All Pro Wrestling boot camp as a trainee. He was known as Giant Singh and made his professional wrestling debut against Tony Jones on October 7, 2000. Singh was in training with Brian Ong on May 28, 2001. Ong was training with Singh when he performed a move called flapjack.
Ong instead of pushing Singh back as instructed grabbed Singh’s shirt. He fell on his tailbone or coccyx, whipping his head violently against the mat. Ong died from the combination of the concussion he had received earlier, which the APW trainers did not diagnose. After a day of deliberation, Ong’s family sued APW to hold them responsible and received $1.3 million in damages.

The Great Khali is the only ‘WWE World Heavyweight Champion’. After winning the 20-man Battle Royal, he received the belt. The episode of ‘SmackDown was broadcast on July 20th. He was awarded a Slammy Award’ in 2008 for the Damn! Moment of the Year with ‘Khali Kiss Cam.
