Early Life

Vinesh Phogat was born on the 25th of August, 1994. She was born in the Bhiwani district in Haryana, India. The daughter is wrestler Mahavir Singh Phogat’s brother Rajpal Singh Phogat and her mother’s name is Prem Lata Phogat. She has two siblings, sister Harvinder Phogat as well as sister Priyanka Phogat. Vinesh graduated from CM Senior Secondary School, Jhojnu Kalan, Haryana, and graduated from MDU Rohtak.

Personal Life

Vinesh Phogat married her long-time partner as well as fellow athlete Somvir Rathee on December 13, 2018. He is a twice gold medalist at the championships at the national level. The couple has known each other since 2011, and both are employed by the Indian Railways where they met and fell in love.

Career

Phogat’s first championship in wrestling was held in 2013 at the Asian Wrestling Championships in New Delhi, India. She was awarded silver in the freestyle women’s 52kg category, competing against Tho-Kaew Sriprapa from Thailand. In 2014, she participated in the Commonwealth Games and represented India in the women’s freestyle, 48 kg class in the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, winning the gold medal.

Between 2015 and 2017, Vinesh won the silver medal in her class after defeating the final Yuki Irie from Japan. She was a qualified wrestler to compete in the 2016 Rio Olympics which took place in Istanbul and took the title in the final match, beating Polish grappler Iwona Matkowska. She also qualified for the Olympics through the process.
