Directed by Vishwesh Krishnamoorthy, 99 Songs is a musical romance film in the Hindi language that was released in 2019. Originally penned by Rahman in 2011, the script was initially set to be produced by Eros International in August 2013. However, when Eros withdrew from the project, Rahman took on the responsibility of producing the film himself under his own banner, YM Movies.

Amidst the pandemic, the highly anticipated film titled “99 Songs” was released. The movie features Remo Fernandes, Kunal Kamra, and Kurush Deboo in prominent roles.
In August 2013, A. R. Rahman, who had recently established his production company YM Movies, made an exciting announcement. He revealed his plans to produce a script he had written in 2011, marking his debut as a scriptwriter. Additionally, Rahman took on the responsibility of composing the film’s music.
Following the project’s announcement in 2015, the casting process began in Mumbai. The production house had a specific requirement for the male lead musician, seeking a South Indian actor with a basic understanding of music. They also expressed their intention to include international musicians and actors in the supporting cast.
Initially, the project was scheduled to begin production towards the end of 2015, once A.R. Rahman had completed his work on the films “Tamasha” and “Mohenjo Daro.” However, due to delays in the casting process, the shoot had to be put on hold. Eventually, the principal photography of the film commenced on 10 March 2017.
R. Rahman, the renowned composer, took charge of creating the background music and soundtrack for the film. The album, which had been in production since 2015, features 14 original compositions, tailored for each language release: Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu. For the original Tamil version, the lyrics were written by Madhan Karky.
In October 2017, the team released individual posters featuring Ehan Bhat and Edilsy. Later, during Rahman’s musical concert in Ahmedabad on 3 December 2017, the makers unveiled the film’s teaser, showcasing the official cast and crew. Following this, Rahman officially introduced Ehan Bhat via social media.
Initially planned for an early 2018 theatrical release, there was a lack of official confirmation regarding the film’s release plans. However, on 11 April 2019, A.R. Rahman made an announcement, revealing that “99 Songs” would be released worldwide on 21 June 2019, coinciding with World Music Day.
