Taylor-Johnson was born Aaron Perry Johnson in High Wycombe on 13 June 1990. He was the son of a housewife Sarah as well as Civil engineer Robert Johnson. He is Jewish and has a sibling named Gemma who later played one small part in his Film Tom & Thomas (2002).

His roles on television include Niker from the 2004 BBC adaptation of Feather Boy, Aaron in Danny Brocklehurst’s ITV1 serial Talk to Me, and Owen Stephens in Nearly Famous.
