Alan Rickman began his acting career by playing the role of Tybalt in a BBC series adaptation of Romeo and Juliet. He later portrayed Sherlock Holmes in the 1976 theatrical production of Sherlock Holmes and appeared in The Devil is an Ass as Wittipol from 1976 to 1977.

In 1978, Rickman played Tybalt again in a television production of Romeo and Juliet.
