Plot

Arjun Reddy Deshmukh, a house surgeon at St. Mary’s Medical College in Mangalore, India, possesses remarkable intelligence but is plagued by severe anger management issues. His volatile temper incurs the disapproval of the college dean and earns him a reputation as a bully among his peers.

During an inter-college football match, Arjun and his friend Kamal engage in a brawl with members of the opposing team. As a consequence, the dean confronts Arjun, giving him an ultimatum: apologize or face expulsion. Initially opting to leave the college, Arjun’s decision takes a turn when he encounters Preethi Shetty, a first-year student.

While preparing for a vacation, Arjun stumbles upon a pregnant Preethi sitting alone in a park. Believing that she is trapped in an unhappy marriage, Arjun reconnects with her upon his return. Preethi discloses that she left her husband shortly after their marriage and continued working at a clinic.

Development

Following his decision to discontinue his studies in physiotherapy, Sandeep Vanga embarked on a new path by joining the 2010 Telugu film “Kedi” as an assistant director. For two years, he dedicated his efforts to crafting the script of “Arjun Reddy.”

Despite facing numerous rejections from unwilling producers for four to five years, Vanga’s perseverance paid off when his brother, Pranay Reddy, stepped forward to finance the project. Both Pranay and their father made equal investments in the film.

Filming

On 20th June 2016, the principal photography of the film began in Hyderabad. Later, on 30th November 2016, Kanchana joined the film’s sets. To capture the college life of the protagonists, the filmmakers chose the three heritage buildings of the University College of Hampankatta in Mangalore as filming locations. Additionally, the team also filmed scenes in Dehradun, Delhi, and various parts of Italy.

Music

Arjun Reddy’s soundtrack comprises seven songs, all composed by Radhan. The lyrics for two songs each were penned by Ananta Sriram, Rambabu Gosala, and Shreshta, while Mandela Pedaswamy took charge of writing the lyrics for the song “Mari Mari.”

Release

For the distribution rights of Arjun Reddy in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, Asian Cinemas and KFC Entertainments secured the rights. Overseas distribution was handled by Nirvana Cinemas. The film’s teaser was released on 27th February 2017, followed by the trailer on 12th August 2017.
