Early Life and Education
He was born into a Kutchi Indian Muslim family from Gujarat in Bombay, India. His father was a renowned businessman and was famously referred to as the “Rice King of Burma”. Despite receiving an invitation from Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the founder of Pakistan, to relocate to Pakistan, Premji’s father, Muhammed Hashim Premji, declined the offer and decided to continue residing in India.
Premji holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University. He is married to Yasmeen Premji, and together they have two children named Rishad and Tariq. Currently, Rishad Premji serves as the Chief Strategy Officer of the IT business Wipro.
Career
In 1945, Muhammed Hashim Premji founded Western Indian Vegetable Products Ltd in the town of Amalner, located in the Jalgaon district of Maharashtra. The company specialized in manufacturing cooking oil under the brand name Sunflower Vanaspati, as well as a laundry soap called 787, which was a byproduct of the oil manufacturing process.
Following his father’s passing in 1966, Azim Premji, who was studying engineering at Stanford University at the time, returned to India to take over the company. At the time, it was still known as Western Indian Vegetable Products, and primarily dealt in hydrogenated oil manufacturing.
However, Azim Premji decided to diversify the company’s offerings and expanded into other areas such as bakery fats, ethnic ingredient-based toiletries, hair care soaps, baby toiletries, lighting products, and hydraulic cylinders.
