Plot

In a village in Telangana, Gajula Komurayya leads a contented life with his elder son Ailayya, daughter-in-law Swaroopa, and grandson Sayilu, who is set to get married soon. Sayilu plans to use his dowry to repay a loan of 15 lakhs INR took to start his unsuccessful small-scale businesses in the village.

However, the family’s happiness is shattered when Komurayya unexpectedly passes away, leading to Sayilu’s wedding being postponed indefinitely as it is considered inauspicious to celebrate or perform any religious event within a year of a family member’s same-surname death.

Komurayya’s death also brings back his estranged daughter, Lakshmi, who was forced to stay away from her family for twenty years because of her husband Narayana’s feud with Ailayya and the latter’s younger brother, Mogilayya. On the eleventh day of Komurayya’s passing, the family experiences an emotional realization, and Sayilu brings a photograph of the family taken twenty years ago, right before Narayana and Ailayya’s argument, which Komurayya had secured.

Soundtrack

Rewritten: Bheems Ceciroleo composed the soundtrack album for the film, with Kasarla Shyam providing the lyrics. Aditya Music released the full soundtrack, which includes three tracks. The first track, “Ooru Palletooru,” was released on February 6, 2023.

Release

Despite being available on OTT platforms like Amazon Prime Video and Simply South outside India since March 24, 2023, Balagam continued to receive a positive response from the audience, prompting those who had already watched it on OTT to revisit the theaters to experience the film on the big screen.

According to 123Telugu, Balagam is a sincere attempt to explore human values and emotions without any commercial elements. The film’s natural village setting, heartwarming performances, and satisfying emotional sequences are its strengths, earning it a 3 out of 5-star rating.

The Indian Express’s Raghu Bandi also gave the film a 3 out of 5-star rating, calling it an honest portrayal of rural Telangana life. The Times of India critic praised the film’s creative and technical team while highlighting the screenplay and acting performances of Priyadarshi and Kavya Kalyanram.
