Born on 7 June 1974 in London, England, Bear Grylls’ full name is Edward Michael Grylls. He is the son of Sir Michael Grylls and Lady Sarah ‘Sally’ Grylls and has an older sister named Lara Fawcett, who gave him his nickname ‘Bear’ when he was just a week old.

He spent his early childhood in Donaghadee, Northern Ireland, but when he was four years old, his family relocated to the village of Bembridge on the easternmost part of the Isle of Wight. As a child, he received training in climbing and sailing from his father. At the age of eight, Grylls became a Cub Scout.


Bear Grylls received his education at Eaton House, Ludgrove School, and Eton College, where he played a key role in establishing its first mountaineering club. He went on to study Spanish and German at the University of the West of England, Bristol, and later at Birkbeck College, where he obtained a 2:2 bachelor’s degree in Hispanic Studies in 2002, which he pursued on a part-time basis.

Personal Life

He received his education from several prestigious institutions, including Eaton House, Ludgrove School, and Eton College. While at Eton, he played a significant role in setting up the school’s first mountaineering club.

Later, he pursued his higher education in Spanish and German at the University of the West of England, Bristol, and also studied at Birkbeck College. In 2002, Grylls completed his part-time studies in Hispanic Studies at Birkbeck College and earned a 2:2 bachelor’s degree.


For three years, he was a member of the Territorial Army (Army Reserve UK) and served in the Special Air Service unit. During this time, he trained as a combat survival instructor and gained expertise in various skills such as demolitions, parachuting, unarmed combat, evasive driving, and trauma medic.

In this timeframe, he experienced an accident that resulted in a spinal injury. To recuperate from the injury, he received medical treatment and rehabilitation. Subsequently, in 1997, he accomplished the remarkable feat of scaling Mount Ama Dablam, becoming the youngest Briton to do so.
