  • On 31 January 2024, Hemant Soren stepped down from his position as the Chief Minister of Jharkhand. This happened after officials from the Enforcement Directorate came to his house in Ranchi to ask him questions about a case involving land fraud. Soren went to the Raj Bhavan at about 8:30 in the evening, met with Governor CP Radhakrishnan along with the ED officials, and handed in his resignation.
  • Hemant was arrested because he did not show up for questioning by the ED, even though they had sent him notices related to their investigation into a supposed money laundering case. The first time he was questioned was in November 2021 about illegal mining. The other two times were on 20 January 2023 and 31 January 2023, about money that came from illegal land deals in Ranchi.
