On March 31, 2023, Disney+ Hotstar premiered a captivating murder mystery featuring an intriguing cast of characters including a girl, a stepmother, a lover, a father, a police officer, and a doctor.

 Plot

The film revolves around a young girl from a royal family who returns home, only to sense something amiss within the familiar walls of her opulent palace. With her father supposedly away, she questions whether her stepmother has been truthful. Determined to uncover the secrets lurking behind the palace’s shimmering façade, will the girl unravel the truth?

Meanwhile, Rukmani finds herself burdened with guilt over her involvement in Ratan’s demise, leading her to extend kindness toward Meesha. Although Rukmani never intended to harm the girl, the relentless pressure from Kapil pushes her to the edge, causing her to lose control. Fatima realizes Rukmani’s remorse for her part in Ratan’s death, and her demise becomes the closure she sought, no longer desiring to live.

Story

Gaslight, a gripping Bollywood mystery horror thriller, was written and directed by Pawan Kripalani in 2022. The film features a stellar cast including Chitrangda Singh, Sara Ali Khan, and Vikrant Massey in the lead roles.

Accompanying them are talented actors such as Akshay Oberoi, Rahul Dev, and several others in supporting roles. Produced by Ramesh Taurani and Akshai Puri, Gaslight was brought to the screen under the banners of 12 Street Entertainment and Tips Must Have Hits.

Production

Principal photography for Gaslight began in February 2022 at the picturesque Ranjit Vilas Palace in Wankaner. Impressively, the filming process was wrapped up in a swift 36 days. The second schedule took place in various locations in and around Mumbai, with specific underwater scenes filmed in Khopoli.

It was released on 31 March 2023 on the OTT platform Disney+ Hotstar in Hindi.

Reception

Gaslight garnered a mixed reception from critics. While the film faced criticism for its weak and outdated storyline, it received praise for its effective horror scenes, atmospheric cinematography, and impressive production design. The performances by the actors, particularly Vikrant Massey and Chitrangada Singh, were also lauded.

Bollywood Hungama gave Gaslight a rating of 2.5 out of 5 stars. While the narration was deemed slow and clichéd, the cast’s performances and the unpredictable climax were appreciated. The Indian Express, on the other hand, rated the film 1.5 out of 5 stars, noting its failure to evoke a sense of dread. However, Akshay Oberoi’s performance was acknowledged positively.
