On January 21, 2022, Hridayam was released in theatres worldwide and received critical acclaim from reviewers who praised the direction, story, screenplay, music, score, and cast performances, particularly those of Pranav Mohanlal, Darshana Rajendran, and Kalyani Priyadarshan.

The film was honored with two Kerala State Film Awards, one for Best Film with Popular Appeal and Aesthetic Value. It was also listed among the top-rated Indian movies of 2022 on the Internet Movie Database (IMDB).

Plot

For his graduation, Arun Neelakandan leaves Kerala and enrolls in the popular engineering college KC Tech in Chennai. At the college, he falls in love at first sight with Darshana, his college sweetheart. After being ragged by his seniors, Arun grows closer to Darshana, and their relationship blooms when the seniors are suspended. One day, Arun accompanies his friend Antony to meet his online girlfriend and becomes attracted to her colleague.

In a moment of weakness, he lies about his relationship status and leans in for a kiss, but they are interrupted by the moral police. Feeling guilty, Arun confesses everything to Darshana, who angrily ends the relationship. In the heat of their argument, they challenge each other to find better romantic partners than each other.

Development

The film ‘Hridayam’ was announced in December 2019, with Visakh Subramaniam as the producer and Noble Babu Thomas as the co-producer. It featured Pranav Mohanlal, Kalyani Priyadarshan, and Darshana Rajendran in lead roles, and was scheduled to be released during Onam 2020. The film also marked the return of Merryland Studio to film production after a 30-year break, under their new company Merryland Cinemas.

Filming

Principal photography for the film commenced in early February 2020 and the initial schedule took place in Kochi, followed by a two-day shoot in Kollengode, Palakkad. The primary location for the film was Chennai. However, filming was halted in March 2020 due to a nationwide 21-day COVID-19 lockdown in India.

Music

Hesham Abdul Wahab composed the music for the film. In early 2020, Vineeth traveled to Istanbul to record some of the music pieces for the film. Actor Prithviraj Sukumaran has lent his voice to a song in the film. Additionally, Darshana Rajendran, besides acting in the film, has also sung the track titled “Darshana”.

Release

Theatrical

When filming was halted midway in March 2020, the producers announced that the film would have a theatrical release. In October 2021, the release date of the film was officially announced along with the release of the song “Darshana”. The film was set to have a worldwide theatrical release on January 21, 2022.
