The movie delves into the issue of police bias and state violence against a marginalized community, revolving around the lives of Sengeni and Rajakannu, a couple from the Irular tribe. After Rajakannu is arrested by the police and goes missing from the station.

Sengeni turns to advocate for Chandru for help in seeking justice for her husband. The film’s powerful storytelling and poignant portrayal of real-life events make for a thought-provoking viewing experience.

Plot

In 1993, Rajakannu and Sengeni, a couple from the oppressed Irula tribe, worked in the fields of oppressive caste men to control rat infestation and catch venomous snakes. One day, Rajakannu was summoned to catch a snake that had entered a rich man’s home. The following day, the man’s wife reported a case of burglary and raised suspicions about Rajakannu.

After the incident, Chandru, Mythra, Sengeni, and the Irular tribe joined forces to fight against injustice. During their investigation, Chandru discovered that Irutappan had called Varadarajulu, but the police had forced him to do so. Meanwhile, Mythra located Iruttapan and Mosakutty, who testified in court about the torture they had experienced and how the police had killed Rajakannu.

Development

Reports emerged in March 2020 that Suriya would team up with T. J. Gnanavel, known for his work on Kootathil Oruthan (2017), for a legal drama film centered around tribal communities. Gnanavel previously served as the dialogue writer for the Tamil-dubbed version of Suriya’s Rakta Charitra 2 (2010), which was titled Ratha Sarithram.

Music

Sean Roldan composed the film score and soundtrack for ‘Jai Bhim’, marking his first collaboration with Suriya. The lyrics for the songs were penned by Yugabharathi, Raju Murugan, and Arivu. In August 2021, Roldan recorded the first track of the film, later revealed to be titled “Power Song,” with lyrics and vocals by Arivu.

Release

2D Entertainment, on August 5, 2021, inked a four-film agreement with the streaming service Amazon Prime Video. The deal entailed that four of the studio’s forthcoming projects would debut exclusively on Prime Video, sidestepping a theatrical release.
