Her birthplace was Rajahmundry, Andhra Pradesh. Her father’s name was Krishna Rao and he was a Telugu film financier. Her mother of her was Neelaveni. Jaya is a classically trained dancer. At the age of 14, she was performing her first annual event.

She was then given the chance to dance in the short Telugu film. The first film she acted in that was in Telugu was Anthuleni Katha (1976). She also appeared in movies like Siri Siri Muvva (1976), Adavi Ramudu, Ninaithale Inikkum, etc. She was then in the film Tamil movie 47 Natkal for filmmaker K. Balachander. She had a shot to appear in the film “Kamchor”.
