Controversies

Question on Jothimani’s dressing style

In 2019, Jothimani stirred up controversy when she faced criticism for her choice of attire, alternating between sarees and jeans with a top on different occasions. To promote her initiative, calendars and pamphlets were distributed throughout her constituency. The criticism was voiced by Tamil Nadu General Secretary KS Narendiran, who took to Twitter to share a picture of Jothimani in two contrasting outfits. She also established youth groups as part of her outreach to engage with voters. In response to Narendiran’s viral tweet, Twitter users began posting pictures of Narendra Modi wearing different attire, including shirts and kurta-pajamas on various occasions.

Tamil Nadu state assembly election, 2016

Between the time when the DMK and Congress announced that the national party, Congress, would contest 41 seats and the subsequent revelation of which specific seats those would be, there was an extended period of suspense and silence. During this time, Jothimani participated in a television panel discussion where she criticized the BJP’s handling of immigrants during the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, when Aravakurichi did not appear on the Congress list, Jothimani expressed strong criticisms and even contemplated running as an independent candidate. In response, Karu made personal comments about her during the show, which led her to leave the discussion abruptly. Following a meeting with her supporters, she decided not to contest in the Aravakurichi constituency, prioritizing the overall interest of the Congress party. Ultimately, the Election Commission canceled the polls for both the Aravakurichi and Thanjavur Assembly seats.

2019 Election to the Parliament

Jothimani secured the Indian National Congress’ candidacy for the 2019 Indian general election, representing the Karur constituency in the Lok Sabha. In 2019, she raised concerns about Karur district collector T. Anbazhagan allegedly blocking her mobile number, hindering her ability to address the issues faced by the people in Karur.

In what was considered a significant upset by many media outlets and political analysts, Jothimani managed to defeat the experienced All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam leader, M. Thambidurai, who had previously held roles as the Deputy Speaker of the Lok Sabha and in the Union Cabinet.
