Kahaani Hindi Movie 2012 Cast, Plot, Production, & Release

Kahaani was a remarkable film that was conceived and developed by Sujoy Ghosh on a modest budget of ₹80 million (US$1.0 million). Ghosh collaborated with Advaita Kala in co-writing the script. During the production, the crew utilized guerrilla-filmmaking techniques on the bustling streets of Kolkata to maintain a low profile and avoid drawing unnecessary attention.

This approach added a sense of authenticity to the film’s creative portrayal of the city. Additionally, Kahaani employed a local crew and cast members, further contributing to its distinctiveness and making it a noteworthy cinematic experience.

Plot

Two years after a tragic poison-gas attack on a Kolkata Metro Rail compartment, resulting in the loss of all passengers, Vidya Bagchi, a pregnant British-Indian software engineer, arrives in Kolkata from London. Her purpose is to find her missing husband, Arnab Bagchi, amidst the vibrant Durga Puja festivities. Satyaki “Rana” Sinha, a police officer, extends his assistance to Vidya in her quest.

Development

Sujoy Ghosh, the director of Kahaani, approached Advaita Kala, a renowned novelist, and scriptwriter, with the concept for the film. Kala drew inspiration from her own personal experiences in Kolkata, a city she had relocated to in 1999, much like the protagonist of the film. This connection to the city played a significant role in shaping the narrative of Kahaani.

Soundtrack

The film score is composed by Clinton Cerejo, whereas the soundtrack album is composed by Vishal–Shekhar, and the lyrics for the film’s six songs were written by Vishal Dadlani, Anvita Dutt, and Sandeep Srivastava. Several of R. D. Burman’s Hindi and Bengali compositions were used in the background.

Casting

Jyothika, the renowned actress, revealed that she was initially offered the role of Vidya Bagchi in Kahaani. However, she declined the offer, and the role ultimately landed in the capable hands of Vidya Balan. Director Sujoy Ghosh had long harbored the desire to collaborate with Vidya and approached her for the film in 2010, solidifying their partnership for this project.

Filming

Filming took place on the streets of Kolkata, where Ghosh often employed the art of guerrilla filmmaking (shooting in real locations without any previous knowledge given to onlookers) to avoid unwanted attention.

Release

The first-look poster of Kahaani was unveiled on December 2, 2011, followed by the release of the official trailer on January 5, 2012. The poster, featuring a pregnant Vidya Balan and devoid of any romantic elements, received a positive reception. Critics had initially set low expectations for the film, considering the director’s previous box-office disappointments.
