Plot

During his visit to a library in Greece, Ranganath Rao, an archaeologist, and professor stumbles upon a book written by Ptolemy that reveals Shri Krishna had entrusted his friend Uddhava with an anklet that contains solutions to all the deadly problems humans will face in the Kali Yuga that followed the end of Dvapara Yuga.

Meanwhile, in Hyderabad, Karthikeya “Karthik”, a doctor who values science and logic, is suspended from his job for slapping a mayor who attempted to perform a Yagna in the ICU for his son. Karthik’s father fractures his leg, and a plant of Tulasi in front of their house is hit by an ox, leading his mother to believe that her family is being punished for not fulfilling a vow made to Shri Krishna years ago.

To appease his mother’s beliefs, Karthik takes her to Dwarka, where his uncle Sadananda, an ardent devotee of Shri Krishna, resides. One night, Karthik encounters a mortally wounded Ranganath Rao, who tries to convey something to him. However, when Karthik goes to get an auto-rickshaw to take him to the hospital and returns, Rao is nowhere to be found.

Production

Nikhil Siddhartha announced the sequel to ‘Karthikeya’ via Twitter in October 2017, mentioning that the film’s production would begin by the end of 2018. However, due to delays in his previous movie ‘Arjun Suravaram,’ the shooting of ‘Karthikeya 2’ commenced in March 2020 with a puja ceremony held in Tirupati.

Soundtrack

Kaala Bhairava composed the film score and soundtrack album for ‘Karthikeya 2,’ and the music rights were obtained by Zee Music Company. The complete soundtrack album was launched on August 31, 2022, while the Hindi version of the album was released on September 7, 2022.

‘Karthikeya 2’ was initially slated to release on 22 July 2022 but was postponed to 12 August 2022 to avoid a clash with ‘Thank You.’ However, it was further delayed by a day to avoid competition with another Telugu film, ‘Macherla Niyojakavargam.’ The movie released on 13 August 2022 in Telugu, along with a dubbed Hindi version.

According to Sakshi, the worldwide theatrical rights for the film were sold for ₹17.25 crore, and Zee Studios obtained the theatrical, satellite, and digital distribution rights. The film’s theatrical rights alone were sold for ₹12.80 crore. The Malayalam dubbed version of ‘Karthikeya 2’ hit theatres across Kerala on 23 September 2022.

Future

It’s interesting to note that director Chandoo Mondeti expressed his desire to turn Karthikeya into a franchise before the release of Karthikeya 2. In an interview with The New Indian Express, he stated that he has plans to make multiple films in the series. The ending of Karthikeya 2 also hints at the possibility of a Karthikeya 3, with the story continuing from where it left off.
