Rajamouli holds the distinction of being referred to as the highest-grossing Indian director of all time and the highest-paid director in India.

Notably, three of Rajamouli’s films—namely, “Baahubali: The Beginning” (2015), “Baahubali 2: The Conclusion” (2017), and “R” (2022)—rank among the top six highest-grossing films in India to date. Additionally, all three of these films held the title of being the most expensive Indian films ever made at the time of their respective releases.

Family

Koduri Srisaila Sri Rajamouli was born into a prominent Telugu film family. His father is the renowned writer and director K. V. Vijayendra Prasad, and his mother is Raja Nandini. He has a brother named Kanchi Rajamouli, who is an actor, and his uncle, Siva Datta, has also been involved in filmmaking. Furthermore, some of his cousins include M. M. Keeravani, Kalyani Malik, and S. S. Naaga Rajamouli.

Rajamouli is married to Rama Rajamouli, who is the sister of singer Keeravani’s wife. Rama, who had a previous marriage and a son, became Rajamouli’s wife. Together, they have two children, a son named S. S. Karthikeya and a daughter named S. S. Mayookha. Rama Rajamouli takes charge of the family and their financial matters, and she is also known for her work as a costume designer for Rajamouli’s films.

Early Life

Koduri Srisaila Sri Rajamouli, born on October 10, 1973, into a Telugu family, hails from Kovvur in Andhra Pradesh. He is the son of V. Vijayendra Prasad and Raja Nandini. Interestingly, at the time of his birth, his parents were residing in Amareshwara Camp near Manvi in the Raichur district of Karnataka. They held a deep devotion to Lord Shiva, and Rajamouli’s name, Srisaila Sri Rajamouli, was inspired by a dream his mother had during a visit to the pilgrimage site of Srisailam. He has one sister.

Education

He pursued his education up to the 4th grade in Kovvur and continued his studies, completing his Intermediate education in Eluru. As a child actor, he played the role of Lord Krishna in a film produced by his father. He also gained experience in theater and worked at AVM recording. Subsequently, he joined his father as an assistant for approximately six years. During this period, he frequently shared his storytelling talents with various producers and filmmakers.

Personal Life

In 2001, Rajamouli married Rama, who is the sister-in-law of his cousin Keeravani. Following their marriage, Rama took on the role of a costume designer for many of Rajamouli’s films. Additionally, Rajamouli adopted Rama’s son from her previous marriage, Karthikeya. The couple also adopted a daughter named Mayookha. Notably, Karthikeya is married to Pooja Prasad, who happens to be the niece of the renowned Telugu actor Jagapathi Babu.

Career

He initiated his film career as an apprentice under the tutelage of the veteran film editor Kotagiri Venkateswara Rao, dedicating six months to this learning experience. Looking back, he recalls, “Even in my early 20s, I didn’t know how to plan for my future. My father would constantly scold me for doing nothing. I joined films just to get away from his nagging. Slowly, I found my love for direction.”

Following this, he briefly worked at the AVM recording theatre in Chennai and also served as an assistant director to Kranthi Kumar for a period. Subsequently, he worked alongside his father, Vijayendra Prasad, for six years. During this time, he ventured into writing for films but was often dissatisfied with how other directors executed his scripts. His frustration as a writer served as the catalyst that motivated him to become a director, allowing him to bring his creative vision from the written word to the screen with precision.
