He was a student at The Hindu College. He was an outstanding student and was ranked 1st during his education. Completed his bachelor’s degree and master’s degree at Punjab University in the year 1952 and in 1954 respectively.

He was born on 26 September 1932 in Gah (Punjab) in what is now the Pakistani province. He was born to the Sikh family of Gurmukh Singh, and Amrit Kaur.
