Early Life

He was born on 26 September 1932 in Gah (Punjab) in what is now the Pakistani province. He was born to the Sikh family of Gurmukh Singh, and Amrit Kaur. Because his mother passed away at a young stage of life, Manmohan was brought up by his maternal grandmother. In his childhood, Manmohan was keen on academics and often topped his class as well.

Personal Life

The legend He has been married to Gursharan Kaur since 1958. They have three children: Upinder Singh, Daman Singh, and Amrit Singh. He has undergone numerous cardiac bypass procedures.


In 1991, as India was in the midst of a severe financial crisis, then Premier of India, P.V. Narasimha Rao was appointed by Manmohan Singh to be the Finance Minister of the Union. During this time, Singh discharged India from the “Licence Raj” which led to an inefficient growth of the economy and also corruption within India. Indian economy.

He served in the office since 1996. In 1991 Singh became an official member of the Rajya Sabha from Assam by P.V. Narasimha Rao. He was elected again by the Opposition in the year 1998 to be the head of the opposition in the Rajya Sabha and continued to remain a member until 2004.
