Early Life

Manoj Kumar’s journey into the world of Indian cinema is rooted in his humble beginnings and his determination to pursue his passion for acting. Born as Harikrishan Giri Goswami into a Hindu Brahmin family in the town of Abbottabad, which was then part of British India’s North-West Frontier Province (now located in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan), he came into the world with a name that would later become synonymous with talent and patriotism.

The historic events of Partition deeply impacted his family, and when Manoj Kumar was just 10 years old, they made the difficult decision to migrate from Jandiala Sher Khan to Delhi, seeking a new life and opportunities in the newly independent India.

Personal Life

Manoj Kumar got married to Shashi Goswami in 1973, and they have two children, Vishal and Kunal. His son, Vishal Goswami, has also acted in a few films, but he did not achieve the same success as his father.


Manoj Kumar’s journey in the world of Indian cinema began with a little-noticed debut in the film “Fashion” in 1957. However, it was his talent and dedication that soon caught the attention of filmmakers, leading him to land his first leading role in the movie “Kaanch Ki Gudia” in 1960, where he starred opposite Saida Khan. This marked the beginning of his ascent to stardom in the film industry.
