Mariam, a selfless orphan raised in a Christian orphanage, receives an offer to care for a child in a prosperous household situated in a small village. Motivated by her desire to contribute to the betterment of the orphanage, Mariam accepts the offer. She arrives at the household and meets Rishi, a young boy, as well as his affluent parents, Ramsay and Swetha.
Ramsay, who was previously known as Ramasamy, had a difficult upbringing as an orphan. He started working in the cotton mill owned by Swetha’s father and gradually climbed the ladder of success, often resorting to questionable means.
Eventually, Ramsay managed to win the affection of Swetha, who is the sole heiress to a substantial fortune, using drugs. They married, and Ramsay now oversees the operations of a newly established cotton mill, although Swetha’s father still maintains strict control over the business.

According to a report by IANS in December 2015, it was announced that Gautham Vasudev Menon and Selvaraghavan would be joining forces to produce a horror film under Menon’s production house, Ondraga Entertainment. This collaboration brought together two acclaimed filmmakers in the Tamil film industry.
After the shelving of the project titled “Kaan,” Yuvan Shankar Raja, the acclaimed composer, and Selvaraghavan, the director, decided to collaborate once again. This time, it was for the film “Nenjam Marappathillai.” The decision to bring Yuvan on board for the soundtrack came as a natural choice for Selvaraghavan.

In July 2016, the first look poster of “Nenjam Marappathillai” was unveiled. Observers at Behindwoods, a popular media outlet, noted several similarities between the poster and another shelved film by Selvaraghavan called “Doctors” (not to be confused with the film “Doctor”).
These similarities included the lead character’s sitting posture and choice of attire. Due to these resemblances, some speculated that “Nenjam Marappathillai” might be a revival of the previously shelved project, “Doctors,” albeit with a new title.
“Nenjam Marappathillai” was originally planned to release on the auspicious occasion of Maha Shivaratri, specifically on 24th February 2017. However, no official confirmation regarding the release date was provided by the film’s team. Subsequently, the film was rescheduled for release on 30th June 2017.
