Mohinder Amarnath Bhardwaj, born on September 24, 1950, is a retired Indian cricketer, cricket analyst, and actor. He is the son of Lala Amarnath, who served as India’s first captain after independence. He was an integral part of the Indian team that achieved victory in the 1983 Cricket World Cup.

Early Life

Mohinder Amarnath was born on September 24, 1950, in Patiala as the second eldest son of Lala Amarnath and Kailash Kumari. His elder brother, Surinder, enjoyed a career as an international cricketer, while his younger brother, Rajinder, played as a former first-class cricketer. Additionally, Mohinder has two sisters named Kamala and Dolly.

Mohinder Amarnath is married to Inderjit Amarnath, and they have one daughter.


Mohinder Amarnath made his debut as a quick-bowling all-rounder against Australia in Chennai in December 1969. However, he reached his peak as a top-order batsman, primarily occupying the No. 3 position for the Indian team. Known for his adeptness with the ball, Mohinder showcased exceptional skill and control in delivering swingers and cutters.

He played 69 Tests scoring 4,378 runs at a batting average of 42.50, with 11 hundreds and 24 fifties, and claimed 32 wickets at a bowling average of 55.68 apiece. In 85 One Day Internationals, he scored 1,924 runs at an average of 30.53 and a highest score of 102 n.o. and claimed 46 wickets at 42.84 apiece.

His batsmanship, courage, and ability to withstand and conquer pain have earned praise from formidable fast bowlers such as Imran Khan from Pakistan and Malcolm Marshall from the West Indies. During the 1982-83 season, Mohinder showcased his exceptional skills in 11 Test matches against Pakistan (5) and the West Indies (6), accumulating over 1000 runs across the two series.

In the book “Idols,” the esteemed Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar hailed Mohinder Amarnath as the finest batsman in the world, recognizing his outstanding abilities. Notably, Mohinder marked his first Test century at the challenging Perth WACA ground, renowned for its fast and bouncy pitch, while facing the formidable Jeff Thomson.


He played his last Test match for India in 1988 against West Indies in Chennai. He played his last ODI for India against the same opposition at Mumbai next year.

On June 25, 1983, India achieved a historic milestone by defeating the two-time champion West Indies by 43 runs in the final match held at Lord’s. This victory made India the second team ever to win the coveted World Cup title. It was an extraordinary accomplishment that left a lasting mark in the annals of Indian cricket history.
