Murungakkai Chips, an Indian Tamil-language adult comedy film, was released in 2021. It was written and directed by debutant Srijar and produced by Libra Productions and Firstman Film Works. The film features Shanthanu Bhagyaraj and Athulya Ravi in the lead roles.

The music and score for the film were composed by Dharan Kumar. Murungakkai Chips hit the theatres on December 10, 2021, or else he will lose his entire wealth, valued at 300 crores, which will be donated to an orphanage, aiming to sabotage his grandfather’s conditions and profit from the situation by receiving a commission from an orphanage owner.

Plot

Arjun (played by Shanthanu Bhagyaraj) and Shanthi (played by Athulya Ravi) find themselves in an arranged marriage, eagerly anticipating their first night together. However, their plans are disrupted when Arjun’s grandfather (portrayed by K. Bhagyaraj) reveals a peculiar family tradition. According to this tradition, Arjun must resist touching his wife on their first night

Simultaneously, Shanthi’s aunt (played by Urvashi) shares a different belief with her. She advises Shanthi to ensure that she consummates the marriage on the first night, as women in their families who failed to do so have supposedly faced infertility issues. Adding to the complexity, the family manager Lingusamy (played by Manobala) and his wife (portrayed by Jangiri Madhumitha) conspire against Arjun.

Reception

Suganth from The Times of India gave a rating of 1.5 out of 5 to the film and described the scenes inside the first night room as juvenile. The conversations between the lead characters were criticized for not resembling genuine pillow talk. The overall verdict was that the film fell short as an adult comedy, being deemed as “flaccid.” Similarly, Sify also gave a rating of 1.5 out of 5 and referred to Murungakkai Chips as a wannabe adult comedy.
