Plot

Surya Prakash, an honest software engineer, leads a content life with his loving parents. He holds their dreams close to his heart, as they selflessly sacrificed their aspirations for his upbringing. Everything seems to be going well when Surya gets engaged to Meenakshi. However, the state is thrown into turmoil following the untimely demise of Rajagopal, a respected and upright lawyer.

The police force, under immense pressure to apprehend the killer, finds themselves entangled in the case. In a shocking turn of events, Surya is unjustly implicated by CI Kishore, the officer in charge. Despite Surya’s innocence, all the potential witnesses who could support his claims mysteriously turn against him, succumbing to threats from Kishore. As a result, Surya finds himself behind bars as an undertrial prisoner.

Development

The film is Vijay Kanakamedala’s directorial debut. Naresh, who is known for his comic roles, is cast as an under-trial prisoner. Varalaxmi Sarathkumar is seen as an advocate that helps falsely convicted victims. Srikanth Iyengar is a crooked lawyer while Priyadarshi is seen as a controversial YouTuber.

Principal photography

The filming of the movie commenced in January 2020 at Ramanaidu Studios in Hyderabad. The initial schedule was successfully wrapped up by February 2020. Additionally, certain scenes were shot at an Aluminum factory in the city to add authenticity to the film. The production team made significant progress, with approximately 80% of the shoot being completed by June 2020.

Critical Reception

According to Thadhagath Pathi from The Times of India, the film was given a rating of 3.5 out of 5 stars. The review highlighted the excellent writing skills of director Vijay, stating that the film goes beyond the typical narrative of a protagonist seeking revenge after being wronged and getting bail. The reviewer appreciated the unique storytelling approach taken by Vijay.

Box office

The film grossed ₹6.4 crore in the first week. It is Naresh’s first commercially successful film after nearly 8 years.

The premiere of Naandhi took place on 12 March 2021 following its acquisition by the Aha streaming platform.
