Naomi Osaka was the daughter of Leonard Francois Osaka and Tamaki Osaka. Leonard Osaka is her father and Tamaki Osaka is her mother. They met when Leonard visited Sapporo in 1990 as a college student. Tamaki’s father discovered that Tamaki was dating a non-Japanese man and accused her of bringing shame to the family.

Tamaki and her husband moved to Osaka. For nearly a decade Tamaki had little contact with her family. The couple had a daughter in Osaka, Mari, who was also a professional tennis player. Naomi was born 18 months later. For practical reasons, the girls adopted their mother’s name in Japan.

Naomi Osaka, a Japanese tennis player who has never played on the ITF Junior Circuit, made her debut on the ITF Women’s Circuit in October 2011. She was 14 years old at the time. In the end, she lost four times in the finals at the ITF level. She became a professional tennis player in September 2013 and won her first match at the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association), Stanford Classic 2014 against Samantha Stosur, a former US Open Champion.

Despite not winning another WTA main draw in 2015, she rose in ranking and achieved a career breakthrough at the 2016 Pan Pacific Open. She reached her first WTA final at 18. She lost to Caroline Wozniacki in the final, but she was ranked among the top 50 WTA players and was named the WTA Newcomer Award Winner.
