The film Plane was initially announced in 2016 and went through several distribution changes. It was acquired by Lionsgate in 2019, then sold to Solstice Studios in 2020, and finally re-acquired by Lionsgate in 2021. The movie was filmed in Puerto Rico. It was released in the United States on January 13, 2023.

Plot

Former RAF pilot Brodie Torrance, hailing from Scotland, assumes the role of a commercial pilot as he takes command of Trailblazer Airlines Flight 119. On board are 14 passengers and three cabin crew members, all set for a journey from Singapore to Honolulu, with a brief layover in Tokyo. Among the passengers lurks Louis Gaspare, a wanted murder suspect.

Unexpectedly, the aircraft encounters a critical situation, leading to an emergency landing on Jolo island in the Philippines. Meanwhile, in New York City, the board of Trailblazer Airlines contacts their crisis manager, Scarsdale. Recognizing the urgency of the matter, Scarsdale promptly deploys a private military organization to rescue the passengers.

Production

MadRiver Pictures secured the rights to “The Plane,” an original concept by novelist Charles Cumming, on July 13, 2016. The project attracted the involvement of esteemed producers Marc Butan from MadRiver Pictures, as well as Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Mark Vahradian from Di Bonaventura Pictures. Fast forward to October 2019.

Release

After its production journey, “The Plane” made its way to theaters in the United States on January 13, 2023, distributed by Lionsgate. Initially scheduled for release on January 27, 2023, the film arrived earlier than anticipated. Following its theatrical run, “The Plane” became available for Video on Demand (VOD) on February 3, 2023.

“The Plane” garnered a box office success, accumulating $32.1 million in the United States and Canada, while earning an additional $20.1 million in other territories. This brought the film’s total worldwide gross to an impressive $52.2 million.

Critical Response

According to Rotten Tomatoes, a review aggregator website, 77% of the 162 critics’ reviews are positive, and the average rating is 6/10. The website’s overall agreement states:

Sequel

In February 2023, it was revealed that Colter would be reprising his role as Louis Gaspare for a sequel titled “Ship.” The sequel will have Richet returning as an executive producer, alongside MadRiver Pictures, Di Bonaventura Pictures, and G-BASE Productions, who are also collaborating once again. Although Butler will not be the lead actor, there is a possibility that he might make a cameo appearance in the film.
