Rajat Sharma was born on February 18, 1957, in Sabzi Mandi, Delhi, to a Brahmin family. He grew up with six brothers and one sister. He attended Ramjas School for his schooling and pursued higher studies at Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC), where he joined the Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad. In 1977, he was elected as the General Secretary of the Delhi University Students Union. In 1997, he tied the knot with Ritu Dhawan.


Rajat Sharma received his primary education from a local school in Delhi before joining Ramjas School in Karol Bagh for further studies. He pursued his higher education at the esteemed Shri Ram College of Commerce in Delhi, where he completed his M.Com degree.

Rajat Sharma had a keen interest in observing life around him. He currently holds the position of Chairman & Editor-in-Chief of India TV and is well-known for hosting the news program “Aap Ki Adalat.” The show, which he started in 1992, has become one of the most popular news programs in India. Upon completing his Master’s degree in Commerce, Rajat Sharma began his career as a researcher for Janardan Thakur, a journalist who had just left Ananda Bazar Patrika to start a new syndicate column. He later joined Onlooker Magazine as a trainee and was eventually promoted to editor in 1985 after working there for some time. He then relocated to Mumbai and became an editor at Sunday Observer before moving on to The Daily in the same capacity.

In 1992, while on a flight to Delhi, Rajat Sharma met Subhash Chandra, the founder of Zee TV, and during a casual conversation, the idea for “Aap Ki Adalat” was born. The first episode of the show was filmed for Zee TV in 1993, featuring Lalu Yadav, the former Chief Minister of Bihar.
