Rajiv Gandhi became India’s youngest prime minister in India at 40 years old. It was in 1991 that was shot dead in the course of campaigning for elections. Following it was over, He was awarded Bharat Ratna by the Government of India. Today marks the 29th anniversary of the death.

Rajiv Gandhi was born on the 20th of August 1944, in the nation’s prominent political dynasty -the Nehru-Gandhi family. The mother of his father, Indira Gandhi was the first and only woman Premier of India. Feroze Gandhi, a major part of the Indian National Congress and the editor of The National Herald newspaper was his father.

Early Life and Education

He initially attended the Welham Boys’ School and later attended the prestigious Doon School in Dehradun. After that, he traveled to the United Kingdom to study at Cambridge University. He was introduced to Sonia Maino (later Sonia Gandhi) from Italy at Cambridge University. Following his return to his trip to the United Kingdom, showed little interest in politics, and he shifted to becoming an experienced pilot.

Personal Life

In 1968, He married Edvige Antonia Albina Maino. Antonia Maino changed her name to Sonia Gandhi and chose India as her place of residence. In the year 1970, the couple had a baby. to a son, and named the baby Rahul Gandhi. In 1972 the couple had a baby girl named Priyanka Gandhi.

Political Career

Following the death of their younger brother Sanjay on the 23rd of June, 1980 in an air crash, He returned to Delhi from London and buried the body of his brother. Following Sanjay’s demise, seventy members of the Congress Party went to Indira to sign a proposal and demanded to become a part of the Indian political scene.

Indira assured them of the decision. He was asked this and he said that if it benefits his mother, he’ll be a part of the political scene. On the 16th of February 1981, He began his political career and addressed a crowd in Delhi.

Prime Minister of India

After the assassination of Indira on the 31st of October 1984, in the presence of security guards who were stationed at their New Delhi residence, He was elected as the Prime Minister. In the aftermath, the Congress Party, riding high after the tragedy, scored an overwhelming victory in the following elections for the parliamentary seat.
