Birth & Early Life
Ritu Phogat was born on May 2, 1994, in Balali, Haryana, India. She was raised in a Punjabi Jatt family, born to parents Mahavir Singh Phogat and Shobha (Daya) Kaur. She has two older sisters, Geeta Phogat and Babita Kumari, as well as a younger brother named Dushyant Phogat. Her wrestling journey began at the age of 8 when she started her training under the guidance of her father.
He was born into a middle-class Hindu family with a rich wrestling tradition. The family practiced Hinduism, adhering to its customs and traditions. Her father, Mahavir Singh Phogat, is a former wrestler and a senior Olympic coach, while her mother, Shobha Daya Kaur, is a homemaker. Ritu is the third daughter in the family and has three sisters, Geeta Phogat, Babita Phogat, and Sangeeta Phogat, as well as a younger brother named Dushyant Phogat.
She hails from Balali, Haryana, where she received her early education. Her passion for wrestling took precedence in her life, and she devoted most of her time to rigorous wrestling practice, which led her to focus less on her studies.
He made her debut on the international wrestling scene at the FILA Junior World Championship in 2014, which took place in Zagreb, Croatia. She continued to excel in wrestling, winning her second consecutive title at the National Wrestling Championships in October 2016. In November 2017, she secured a silver medal in the 48kg category at the World U-23 Wrestling Championships held in Bydgoszcz, Poland. In her pursuit of a career in mixed martial arts (MMA), she signed with ONE Championship and made her MMA debut in November 2019 at ONE Championship: Age Of Dragons, where she faced Nam Hee Kim.
In 2020, she competed against Nou Srey Pov at ONE Championship: Inside the Matrix and emerged victorious with a TKO. Later, at ONE Championship: Dangal on May 15, 2021, she faced Bi Nguyen for a spot in the 2021 ONE Women’s Atomweight Grand Prix but suffered her first mixed martial arts career loss, losing by split decision.
With a 7-2 record in her MMA career, including three knockout wins and four victories by decision, is set to face Teo in the atomweight category.
He looks up to Khabib Nurmagomedov as her role model in MMA. She was just 17 years old when Nurmagomedov made his UFC debut, and he has been a source of inspiration for her in the sport.
