At the 2012 U.S. National Championships, Mikulak earned bronze in the individual all-around and silver on the individual parallel bars. Despite spraining his ankle during vault on the first night of the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials, he was selected for the Olympic gymnastics team. Mikulak became the first male gymnast from the University of Michigan to join the U.S. Olympic team. At the 2012 Olympics in London, he competed with the U.S. team, placing 5th in the team competition, and finished 5th in the vault final.
