Sarpatta Parambarai, also known as Sarpatta Clan, is a Tamil-language period sports action film released in 2021. It was directed by Pa. Ranjith, who co-produced the film under his banner Neelam Productions, along with Shanmugam Dhakshanaraj of K9 Studios.

Set in the 1970s, the story revolves around the intense rivalry between two clans, Idiyappa Parambarai and Sarpatta Parambarai, in North Chennai. The film explores the boxing culture prevalent in the locality and the political dynamics associated with it.
Plot
In the early 1970s, in the neighborhood of North Madras (Karuppar Nagaram/Perumparacheri), Kabilan, a Dalit laborer working at the Madras Port, aspires to become a renowned boxer like his late father, Munirathnam. However, his mother Bakkiyam adamantly opposes his dreams, as Munirathnam’s involvement in boxing led to his untimely death in an ambush orchestrated by a rival gang. Kabilan finds support from Kevin.
In 1975, during the period of the Emergency declared by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, Rangan, a former boxer, coach, and member of the political party DMK, organizes a boxing tournament between the Sarpatta and Idiyappan clans.
A highly skilled boxer representing the rival Idiyappan clan participates in the tournament. Following the match, Rangan declares that he will groom a prominent boxer to defeat Vembuli, the champion representing the Idiyappan clan, in the upcoming match.

Etymology
“Sarpatta Parambarai” is indeed the name of the movie, and the title carries symbolic significance. The word “Sarpatta” refers to “Four Patta Knives” in Tamil. These knives symbolize strength, fierceness, and a warrior spirit. The word “Parambarai” translates to “Clan” or “Lineage,” indicating a long-standing tradition and heritage.
Music
Santhosh Narayanan, a renowned composer, crafted the soundtrack and film score for “Sarpatta Parambarai.” This collaboration marked his fifth consecutive and final project with director Pa. Ranjith, starting from their debut film “Attakathi” in 2012. Santhosh shared that the film draws inspiration from the various elements of Madras (Chennai), particularly highlighting the descriptive and realistic depiction of North Chennai.

Release
Initially planned for a theatrical release, “Sarpatta Parambarai” underwent a change in strategy due to the closure of cinemas caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The decision was made to release the film directly on the digital platform Amazon Prime Video.
Prior to its release, the film had already generated revenue of ₹35 crores (US$4.4 million) through the sale of satellite television rights and the rights for Hindi dubbing. The broadcast rights of the film were intended to be sold to Colors Tamil and Star Vijay, indicating the anticipation and demand for the film among television viewers.
