The ascetic encouraged Dushyanta to visit the ashrama.
Intrigued, he went to find his wife, Shakuntala but learned that she was no longer there. He then encountered a brave young boy who had pried open a lion’s mouth to count its teeth. The boy introduced himself as Bharata, the son of King Dushyanta, surprising the king.

Development
Director Gunasekhar announced a grand project called Hiranya Kashyapa in 2017, with Rana Daggubati in the lead role. The film was supposed to be based on the famous historical epic tale of the Asura, Hiranyakashipu. However, there had been no updates on the film until October 2020 when Gunasekhar announced that the pre-production work for the movie was completed, despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Casting
Following the announcement of completing the pre-production of Hiranya Kashyapa, reports began to circulate that the makers had approached Anushka Shetty to portray the role of Shakuntala in the film. This was after her successful collaboration with Gunasekhar in the historical drama, Rudhramadevi (2015). However, it appears that this potential collaboration did not materialize.
Filming
Hiranya Kashyapa is reportedly set in northern India, featuring the backdrops of Hastinapur, parts of Kashmir, and the banks of the Himalayas. To bring these locations to life, the makers have enlisted the services of renowned art director Ashok Kolarath to handle the set design.
Post-production
The visual and graphics department for Hiranya Kashyapa is being handled by industry veteran Alagarsamy Maayan, with talented professionals from Canada, Hong Kong, and China working on the film’s VFX to achieve the desired visual effects. Given the director’s vision for the movie, Gunasekhar has confirmed that the post-production work for the film might take more than ten months to complete.
Release
Shaakuntalam was initially scheduled to release theatrically on November 4, 2022, along with dubbed versions in Tamil, Hindi, Malayalam, and Kannada. However, the release was postponed due to plans to convert the film into a 3D format.
The makers announced that the film would not release on February 17, and a new release date would be shared soon. Eventually, it was announced on February 10, 2023, that the film would release on April 14, 2023. The film premiered on Amazon Prime Video on May 11, 2023.
