She is the daughter of a doctor of homeopathy and her father was an RBI employee. They resided in RBI Headquarters in Santa Cruz, Mumbai. Shefali went to Arya Vidya Mandir.

Shefali was wed to actor Harsh Chaya from 1997 to 2001. Chhaya was an actress and has frequently been employed in the Hindi television industry, mostly in supporting roles. She was married in 2000. got married to director and film producer Vipul Amrutlal Shah. Shefali is the mother of two boys Aryaman as well as Maurya.
Career
Shefali started her career in the film industry in 1995, with the film Rangeela. She was in the spotlight due to her performance as an actress supporting Satya in 1998. Shefali Shah was awarded the Best Actress Filmfare Critics Award at the 44th Filmfare Awards and she was also nominated for the Best Supporting Actress Critics Award for her part in the film.
She played the role in the film Waqt: The Race Against the clock the role of Amitabh Bachchan’s spouse. Shefali was part of the role of Kasturba Gandhi in the 2007 film Gandhi, My Father.
