Sita Ramam is an Indian Telugu-language period romantic drama film released in 2022. It was written and directed by Hanu Raghavapudi and produced by Vyjayanthi Movies and Swapna Cinema. The movie features Dulquer Salmaan, Mrunal Thakur, Rashmika Mandanna, and Sumanth in lead roles. Notably, this film marks Mrunal Thakur’s debut in the Telugu film industry.

The story is set in 1964 and revolves around Lieutenant Ram, an army officer serving at the Kashmir border. As an orphan, Ram receives anonymous love letters from Sita Mahalakshmi. Intrigued, Ram embarks on a mission to find Sita and confess his love to her.

Principal photography for the film began in April 2021 and concluded in April 2022. The shooting locations included Hyderabad, Kashmir, and Russia. The music for the film was composed by Vishal Chandrasekhar, with cinematography handled by P. S. Vinod and Shreyaas Krishna. Editing duties were carried out by Kotagiri Venkateswara Rao.

Plot

In 1964, Ansari, an extremist from Pakistan, hatches a plan to undermine the harmonious bond between Kashmiri Pandits and Muslims by manipulating the Indian Army. As part of his scheme, he sends a group of indoctrinated teenagers to Kashmir, disguised as locals.

Meanwhile, in 1985, Afreen, a provocative Pakistani agitator, is confronted by her university dean in London. The dean demands that Afreen apologizes to Anand Mehta, an Indian philanthropist, for her act of setting his car on fire in retaliation for the burning of the Pakistani flag.

When Ram refuses to comply, Vishnu succumbs to the demands to safeguard Vaidehi and their children from the terrorists. This decision has haunted Vishnu, leading him to live a life filled with regret. He stops Afreen and tries to prevent the delivery of the letter to Sita.

In the letter, Sita discovers the heartbreaking news that Ram has been executed in prison. Distraught, she finds a newspaper clipping attached to the letter, which was published by Marthandam. The article reveals that Ram knew Sita’s identity but loved her regardless of her religion. Such was the depth of his love for her.

Sita Ramam made its debut on 5 August 2022, delighting audiences in Telugu-speaking regions, as well as through dubbed versions in Tamil and Malayalam languages. The Hindi dubbed version of the film was subsequently released on 2 September 2022, expanding its reach further.

A News18 article reported the reasons behind the ban. However, the ban in the United Arab Emirates was later lifted, and the film was released there on 11 August 2022, allowing audiences to finally enjoy it in that region.

Amazon Prime Video secured the digital distribution rights for the film, enabling its premiere on their platform on 9 September 2022. Viewers were able to enjoy the film in Telugu, as well as dubbed versions in Tamil and Malayalam languages. Additionally, the Hindi version of the film premiered on Disney+ Hotstar on 18 November 2022, expanding its availability to a wider audience.
