Sunil Manohar Gavaskar, born 10 July 1949, is an Indian cricket commentator who was a former cricketer and a former player for Bombay and India from 1971 to 1987. Gavaskar is regarded as one of the most important opening batsmen in history.

Early Life

Sunil Gavaskar, a Mumbai native, was born on 10 July 1949. He began playing Cricket at the age of seven. Sunil Gavaskar was named the Indian Best Schoolboy Cricket Player of 1966. He was a School Cricket player who had scored scores of 246*, 222, and 85 runs. In 1968/69, he made his debut in Ranji Trophy with a match against Karnataka. However, he was out for a score of 0 and scored a duck.

Education

Sunil Gavaskar received his primary education at St. Xavier’s School. This school was well-known for its cricketing traditions. He played a lot of cricket while in school and was named the best schoolboy cricketer for India in 1966. He made his debut in the first Class while playing for Vazir Singh Colts, XI from 1966 to 1967.

Personal Life

Gavaskar was born in Marathi to Meenal (nee Mantri), and Manohar Gavaskar. He is now married to Marshneill Gavaskar(nee Mehrotra), the daughter of a Kanpur leather worker. Rohan, their son, was born in Kanpur and played 11 One Day Internationals for India. However, he could not secure his place on the team. His height is Feet Inches  5 4 and his weight is 70 kg.

International Career

Gavaskar’s first series against West Indies is perhaps the most remarkable debut by an international cricketer. He stood tall and rose against the best team in their home country, with their devastating bowling lineup, as no one else has done. The Sunil Gavaskar Calypso was in the West Indies.

Domestic Debut

Sunil Gavaskar, a Marathi child of middle-class parents was born in Mumbai. He played for St. Xavier’s High School in 1966 and was named India’s Best Schoolboy cricketer. In his final year of secondary school, he scored scores of 246* and 222 in school cricket before scoring a century against the London schoolboys.

He was conferred Padma Bhushan and appointed honorary Sheriff in Mumbai in 1994. He is the chairman of the ICC Cricket Committee and has been the advisor to the Indian Cricket team. A Test Cricket Series between Australia and India has been named in his honor as the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
