Initially planned for a theatrical release, Torbaaz faced a setback due to the COVID-19 pandemic, resulting in the film not being able to hit the big screen. Subsequently, the makers decided to strike a distribution deal with Netflix. The film made its premiere on December 11, 2020, exclusively on the Netflix platform, allowing audiences to enjoy it from the comfort of their homes.

Plot

Naseer, an ex-army doctor, visits a refugee camp in Afghanistan where he is haunted by the painful memories of losing his wife and young son in a suicide terrorist attack during his time at the Indian Embassy in Kabul. Ayesha, Naseer’s companion, joins him in running his late wife’s NGO. Together, they strive to bring joy and hope to the children in the camp by organizing cricket activities.

Naseer’s vision is to form a cricket team consisting of boys who have been displaced and victimized by the Afghan war. Through the sport, he aims to foster unity and bridge the gaps between the boys, encouraging them to set aside their differences. However, their efforts are constantly threatened by Qazar and his group, who seek to exploit the boys by turning them into soldiers and suicide bombers.

Production

The announcement for Torbaaz was made in September 2016, with Sanjay Dutt being cast in the lead role. Nargis Fakhri was later roped in to play a prominent role in the film. Principal photography for Torbaaz commenced in December 2017. While the shooting took place in Afghanistan initially, a significant portion of the film was filmed in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, making it the first Indian film to be shot in that location.

Release

Initially scheduled for a theatrical release in May 2019, Torbaaz faced multiple delays. It was later rescheduled for a mid-2020 release. However, due to the closure of cinemas as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the film was unable to have a theatrical release during that time.
