Varisu (pronounced, meaning “Heir”) is an action drama film in the Tamil language, released in 2023. The film is helmed by director Vamshi Paidipally, who co-wrote the screenplay with Hari and Ashishor Solomon. It is a collaborative production by Dil Raju and Sirish, produced under the banners of Sri Venkateswara Creations and PVP Cinema respectively.

The project was officially announced in September 2021, with the title representing Vijay’s 66th film in a leading role. Principal photography commenced in April 2022 and wrapped up in December, marking an extensive filming schedule for the production.

Plot

Vijay Rajendran, the youngest son of Rajendran Palanisamy, a renowned billionaire business tycoon, had always chosen a different path in life. Refusing to succumb to the pressure of joining the family business, he ventured into the world of entrepreneurship by launching his food delivery startup. His decision caused a rift within the family, leading to his disownment and subsequent expulsion from their opulent mansion.

Seven years pass, and life takes an unexpected turn for Rajendran. He receives a devastating diagnosis of stage IV pancreatic cancer, leaving him with a mere 8-10 months to live. Realizing the fragility of his existence, Rajendran decides to reveal his terminal condition and address the matter of his successor before his inevitable demise.

In a much-anticipated announcement on 26th September 2021, Vijay’s 66th film in a leading role was unveiled with the working title “Thalapathy 66”. This project brought together a talented team, with acclaimed director Vamshi Paidipally at the helm. Notably, this film marked the first collaboration between Dil Raju and Sirish, who produced it under the prestigious banner of Sri Venkateswara Creations.

Music

Thalapathy 66 marks the exciting debut collaboration between Vijay and renowned music composer Thaman S. With a total of five songs, the film’s album promises to be a musical treat for fans. The release of the first single, “Ranjithame,” took place on 5th November 2022, followed by the second single, “Thee Thalapathy,” on 4th December, and the third single, “Soul of Varisu,” on 20th December.

Marketing

The release of Varisu’s first poster on 21st June 2022 generated mixed reactions among social media users. Some individuals accused the poster of being plagiarized from the advertisements of the Otto clothing board and even went as far as editing the poster to support their claims.

Varisu was released on 11 January 2023, in the week of Pongal, clashing with Thunivu. The film is planned to have dubbed versions in Telugu (titled Vaarasudu) and in Hindi.

Reception

According to M Suganth of The Times of India, the film received a rating of 3.5 out of 5. In his review, he highlighted Vijay’s impressive performance, praising his ability to deliver witty one-liners that bring a smile to the audience’s faces. Suganth also commended Vijay’s portrayal of the character’s sentimental moments, showcasing his sincerity and dedication to the role.
