Professional Career
At the age of 14, Venus Williams turned professional on October 31, 1994. In her debut tournament, the Silicon Valley Classic in Oakland, Williams faced former NCAA singles champion Shaun Stafford in the first round and emerged victorious in straight sets.
Moving on to the second round, Williams took on world No. 2, Arantxa Sánchez Vicario, and even had a set and a service break lead before ultimately losing the match. Vicario would go on to win the tournament, defeating Martina Navratilova in the final.
Tennis Career
In 1997, Venus Williams made history as the first unseeded finalist in the US Open women’s singles in the Open era, but she was defeated by Martina Hingis in the final. Three years later, in 2000, Williams won both Wimbledon and the US Open, earning her a $40 million endorsement deal with Reebok. She successfully defended both titles the following year in 2001.
At the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia, Williams won the gold medal in the singles competition and also won another gold medal in the doubles event with her sister, Serena.
