Plot

Thookku Durai, a highly respected chieftain and businessman in the village of Koduvilarpatti in Theni, holds significant influence. After a decade, a Thiruvizha (a Tamil festival) is scheduled to take place at the Ayyanar temple in the village. However, Tohoku Durai’s rival, Kozhimuthu, attempts to obstruct the event.

During the festivities, Thooku Durai engages in a confrontation with Gautham, ultimately making his way to the racetrack where his daughter participates. Filled with encouragement, he cheers for her by whistling. In a surprising turn of events, Swetha emerges victorious in the race. Meanwhile, Gautham arrives on the scene, intending to attack Thooku Durai. However, upon witnessing his daughter’s recovery.

Development

In a much-anticipated announcement, Sathya Jyothi Films revealed their collaboration with director Siva and actor Ajith Kumar through their official Twitter handle in late November 2017. This announcement put an end to months of speculation surrounding Ajith Kumar’s next project. Shortly thereafter, in early February 2018, Nayanthara was confirmed as the lead actress for the film, adding to the excitement surrounding the project.

Filming

Originally scheduled to commence on 23 March 2018, the principal photography for the film faced significant delays due to the Tamil Film Producers Council’s strike. However, production eventually kicked off on 7 May in Hyderabad.

Music

The soundtrack album for the film, marking the first collaboration between D. Imman, Ajith Kumar, and Siva, was composed by D. Imman. It showcased their creative synergy. However, it is worth noting that the background music from the film was later replicated for the Bollywood movie Marjaavaan, directed by Milap Milan Zaveri and featuring Sidharth Malhotra.

Viswasam was released on 10 January 2019, coinciding with the occasion of the Thai Pongal festival along with Rajinikanth starrer Petta.

On 25 February 2019, the film was made available for streaming on the digital platform Amazon Prime Video. Additionally, the satellite rights for the film were acquired by Sun Network.

Reception

Box office

On its first day of release, the film garnered impressive box office figures. It amassed over ₹15 crore (US$2.34 million) in Tamil Nadu alone. Additionally, it secured ₹2 crore (US$311,760.06) in Kerala, more than ₹1.5 crore (US$233,820.04) in Karnataka, and ₹1 crore (US$155,880.03) in the rest of India.
