Plot
The movie commences with a monochrome opening scene depicting the 1983 Cricket World Cup Final held on June 25, 1983, between India and West Indies. During the second innings, while India is fielding, Madan Lal bowls to Viv Richards, who is the batsman on strike. Richards hits the ball high in the air for a six but ends up getting caught by Kapil Dev.
Subsequently, the film transitions to May 30, 1983, at the BCCI office in Mumbai, where the officials of BCCI receive an invitation to the Cricket World Cup. Sunil Gavaskar is relieved of his captaincy position, and Kapil Dev is appointed as the new captain. The cricket players comprising of Dev, Mohinder Amarnath, Kirti Azad, Madan Lal, and Sunil Valson.

In mid-July 2016, an announcement was made regarding a film centered around the 1983 Cricket World Cup and India’s triumph in the tournament. The production rights for the film were acquired by Phantom Films, a joint production company owned by Madhu Mantena. The film was set to be a collaborative effort involving directors Anurag Kashyap, Vikas Bahl, and Vikramaditya Motwane.
Music
The film’s soundtrack is crafted by Pritam, who has previously collaborated with director Kabir Khan on films such as “New York” (2009), “Bajrangi Bhaijaan,” “Phantom” (2015), and “Tubelight” (2017). The film score, on the other hand, is composed by Julius Packiam. Pritam initiated the composition process for the film’s soundtrack around mid-2019 and completed it by mid-2021.
Marketing
Before the commencement of the film’s shooting, in October 2017, Ranveer Singh, Kabir Khan, and Phantom Films entered into a contract with Bartle Bogle Hegarty (BBH), a creative agency based in the United Kingdom, for the purpose of branded entertainment and strategic partnerships.
Release
Theatrical
Reliance Entertainment made an announcement in November 2017, stating that the film would have a theatrical release on 5 April 2019. However, due to extensive pre-production work and subsequent delays in the shooting process, the makers decided to postpone the release date. Initially, it was rescheduled to 30 August, and later to 10 April 2020.
