Childhood and Early Life
She was born Indira Nehru on the 19th of November 1917 in Allahabad with her parents Kamala as well as Jawaharlal Nehru. Indira’s father Jawaharlal was an educated lawyer who was a prominent participant in Indira Gandhi’s Indian Independence Movement. She completed her Metric at Pune University and went to Shantiniketan in West Bengal.
She then studied in Switzerland as well as at Oxford University in London. Indira was then allowed to stay for a short time in Switzerland with her mother who was ill. In 1936, following the death of her mother Kamala Nehru succumbed to tuberculosis after which she was sent back to India. Political Change
Gandhi joined the working committee of the Congress Party in 1955. Four years later, she was elected as the party’s president. After the loss of her father’s life in the year 1964, she was elected to the Rajya Sabha, the upper level of the Indian parliament, and appointed the minister for information and radio. If her father’s successor Lal Bahadur Shastri, died abruptly in the year 1966 she was promoted to the post of prime minister.
